share and share alike

So, for the past week, I've been tithing 20% of my winnings to a friend who wants to take a counseling seminar and can't afford it.

I played probably 11 or so hours, and was up about 850... not including rakeback, etc. so, it was a pretty good week.

In case if you were wondering, people still suck at poker.

Anyway, I've decided to buy a wii with this week's winnings and maybe an HDTV in Jan when the prices come down, assuming I don't tank in the next 4 weeks.

The poker show is going well... we are currently holding a best NL HE player alive tournament... this week, it's Johnny Chan against Jesus Ferguson. To me, it's not even close... but we'll see how everyone votes.

also, i played in a tournament yesterday that I just have to show you the hand I went out on. we're down to about 60 players when this happens. How does anyone make that call?

Afterward, he said, "The odds were too good to fold." Sigh. I had lost 2/3 of my chips on a draw that didn't get there, and this hand would have gotten me almost entirely back to my starting stack.

a bunch of hands to look at

New podcast is going up today at http://mysportsradio.com/?cat=59

I played for 2 hours or so and won about 55 bucks (before rakeback and bonus... with those included, it's more like $85). Have a look at some interesting hands, many of which, had they truned out slightly differently, would have made me a much bigger winner. Sigh. I was down 2 hundred for a lot of it, so it was nice to come back... but still...

Some of these hands are amazing because there’s no way the opponent should have called to see the turn. Some are interesting because the opponent wasn’t aggressive enough. At least one is interesting because I just refused to fold even though the other payer did everything but tell me his cards. And the last one is there because it warms my heart to flop so good sometimes.

This one is great. look at the winning player's hand. pklayers like this are the reason I play poker... most of the time anyway.

Well, the new show is up. It was more daunting than the last two because I didn;t have an interview to fill the time. It was all just me, talking about poker. The exec producer loved it, and it looks like I may pull this off.

The show is more popular than ever, which the new episodes getting 20,000 (!) downloads each!

Here's the show link:

Haven't played much besides this... I've been doing shows and negotiating a contract in my normal career... that's taken up all my time. Next week I should be abel to get back into playing in a serious way.

podcasters unite!

So, I'm doing these podcasts... both the poker podcast and also I'm a panelist on the NFL roundtable on my sports radio... turns out these are both very popular shows... the poker podast is the 2nd most popular poker podcast on itunes. The NFL show is the 2nd most popular NFL podcast!

Wowzers. I'm facinated to see if anything comes of these opportunities...

Here are links to the latest of both of those shows.

The King of All Media

I am doing a poker podcast for at least a few weeks for My Sports radio.com. I was interviewed on the show a few months ago, but the host left and they asked me to fill in for a while. I interviewed Matt Matros, who finished 3rd at the WPT championship a few years ago (and is a friend... thanks again, Matt.) I also interviewed a hot chick who works for a new poker site... she was very flirty and did her job extremely well... I was slightly hot and bothered after the interview.

Here's the link, if you want to hear the show: http://mysportsradio.com/?p=3122
click direct MP3 download to hear it the best. It's on Itunes too.

The show has between 5-6 thousand listeners. That's a lot of people in my world.

a sea of beats.

well, i got crushed tonight. bad beat upon bad beat. look at this, 4 hands, I lost to the same player in about 30 minutes. I was well ahead in all of them. that's 360 or so just in these four hands. And the guy taunted me repeatedly each time... "where's your money jew? etc." and then, gave it all away to someone else, of course.

And I'm not even bringing up the flopped set that lost to runner runner full house for 160 or the guy who went from K high no draw on the flop to runner runner flush for 75... Those six hands alone are almost all my losses tonight.

sheesh. Thank God I'm a winning player. nights like this are getting easier at least.

...the swings are funny

So< I played some today at FTP. I was down almost immediately, and stayed down for most of the session. was between 20-250 down, usually closer to 250.

rallied at the end, was up about 8o, which ain't great, but it's better than being down. Then, I lost the last two hands, one on a runner runner flush and the other when the turn came and the turn made the guy a pair.

Ended up 24. Geez. I did get 40 in bonus bucks from FTP and I get rakeback, which should be another 22 or something. So It's 84 for 100 min of work. Not great, but again, better than losing.

351 hands, no AA or KK. had QQ 2x, one time against AA.

whatever, I survived. no complaints or anything. (okay, maybe a few. but they are lame.)

what can we learn about draws form these two hands?

"not as good as party, but..."

So I'm playing everyday at Full tilt now. The players are better than the guys at party poker, I am sad to say.

But not much better. There is very little of a guy calling to the river with 9 high to see if he can make his runner runner gut shot or flush.

That said, there is still a lot of lame play. I am beating the game for 6BB/100, which is insanely high and cannot last. I haven't played that many hands, so it's just a function of sample size. Still, I was winning 3.31/ 100 at party since I got back from the World Series (though that doesn't include the two ugly days at 10/20). I seem to crush 5/10. It's nice.

The plan is to play 5/10 for a while longer, and see if I can keep crushing. If so, I'll move up to either 8/16 or 10/20. If not, I'll settle in at 5/10 for a while longer. That's fine. I'm happy to be making 77 marraccas an hour playing 5/10, as I have since aug 1. And that's before 27% rakeback.

It's not as much as I get paid in my real job, but I love the compettion of poker and am glad to have found something that I can do even if everything else falls apart completely.

Here's a hand to chew on. I think I have to fold on the turn. I didn't, partially because I'd been beating this particular guy a lot and thought he might be playing back at me, and also because I'm not one to fold all that often head up with top pair in limit. What do you think? :

meet the new boss...

So, I played some at UB this week. Mainly 5/10, just to get my feet wet. They have VERY few games going on there. I'm wondering if it's a result of the bill (and people dropping out of online poker) or if they just don't have a whole lot going on ring-game wise.

Still, I won about 100 clams an hour when I was playing there. So, the games were still fairly weak.

They have a game caled Royal hold em, which is hold em with a pinolce deck. It took me a little while to figure the game out, but it's pretty straightforward. I would think it would be great to play with people who are deep and clueless. otherwise, it's like playing tic tac toe.

I'm planning on playing some ring games at FTP, and maybe also stars... no rakeback on stars though... so it's a bit of a tougher sell. Still, if they have all the players... I guess I'll have to go there.

Gearing Up

I'm back from a week in the Berkshires (doing 'real job' type stuff)... I'm excited to start platying on Full tilt or UB... I'm getting rakeback on both, so we'll see where I end up playing. probably, whichever the majority of players move too.

If you haven't been following, Party poker is shutting down to US players. Personally, i think they'll open it back up, not that they see a bunch of the other sites are staying open, especailly the big kahuna, Pokerstars. we'll see.

Whatever. when I first started making real money in online poker, it was on FT and then on UB. Party didn't come till later. (I was clearing bonuses, and won a fair amount). So, in some way, I'm going back to my roots.

Anway, come Monday, I'm gonna get back in the shorthanded limit hold em game, and see what I can do about ending the year on a strong note.

the month of running badly.

OK, I haven't written in a while... but, be honest, you haven't been reading in a while either.

Anyway, I've been running bad lately. Bout time, I guess. The highlight of my poker month was playing with Shannon Elizabeth (of American Pie fame) at the Borgata (with Syracuse Chris, who finished 5th at the WPT Borgata tournament a few years ago) directly on my left. Chris seemed annoyed that I didn't recognize him. I asked him what he did for a living, and he said he played poker mainly, but that he owned a restaurant up in Syracuse. Would anyone else have said where the restaurant was? He was dying for the recognition. being a contrarian, I didn't want to give it. So, I told him that was nice and never did the 'You're Syracuse Chris!' that he sometimes gets. He ain't that big as deal anyway. ). Shannon was very cool and fun, and we talked the entire time. Course, I doubled her up with QQ when she pushed 2nd to act after an utg limper for 23 bb. I moved in to get the utg limper to fold... he boasted to the table earlier in the tournament that "if I raised, I'd have QQ, KK, or AA." and that he always limped with AK. His play showed that to be true. Why he would tell us this I do not knonw. It was useful information, that's for sure. After I moved in, he thought forever and folded his AK face up. Shannon had AK too and his her 4 outer on the flop.

I busted a little bit later when I flopped aces up and lost to a better flopped aces up.

In other news:
here's why I get annoyed with running bad... It's because I get to play against people like this:

I guess my 3 bet on the flop wasn't enough for this guy... I would have 3 bet the river but 109 seemed a very reasonable hand to put him on and he raised yet again after 3 bets on the turn... would trip tens really do that? Maybe A10... any other hand that I'm beating? Not in this case... probably a 3rd river bet would have induced a fold anyway... though, who knows, maybe he would have capped. That would have been sweet. Course, I would have called certain that I was beat. Facinating to see the guy throw away 65 bucks post flop... if he had 3 bet pre flop, I would have folded and missed out on his money.

Football has been berry berry good to me

Well, I had a tough day playing today, lost about 300 smackers.

BUT, thanks to the mansion freeroll, and Joey Porter returning that INT to the HOUSE near the end of the game, I won a thousand clams on the football game tonight and am booking a $700 profit for the day.

I went to a friend's house (Matt Matros, a good guy / great poker player I met at the world series) who also had bet on the game (though he had the game at pick 'em, I had the steelers giving 4.5), and we rooted together over pizza and snacks. When Reed missed the field with 4 min left and the Steelers up by 4, it looked like only one of us was winning a thousand bucks... but then, and the very next play, Dante throws it away to Porter and suddenly, the Steelers are up by 11!

Miami couldn't move the ball on the ensuing possesion (and they would have had to hit the TD and 2 point conversaion, which they would have gone for, for me not to win), and we were in the money.

Good times.

Weirdly, winning never feels as good as I think it will. I am happy and all, and I certainly can use the thou, but I'm not as happy as I thought I'd be. I thought I'd be THRILLED. Especially after they pulled it out at the end and all. But, it's no better than the Pats winning a big game. Maybe not even as good? I wonder if it would be any different winning 100,000.

That's an idea... Mansion should do a 100 K freeroll next time...

tennis and just a tiny bit of poker.

went to the U.S. Open today. It was fun, and oddly tiring.

Played poker for literally five minutes tonight... won 120. That's good, because yesterday I ended up down 130... after being down as much as 450. So even with my two terrible days of 10/20 killing me to the tune of -2600, I'm still up 1500 for the month (which is really just the past three weeks). still winning at 5/10 for over 100 marracas per hour this month. it can't continue at this pace... really, it can't. 60/hour would be a perfectly fantastic win rate based on what i'm playing (two tables, 5/10, shorthanded limit hold me).

It really does say that I should be moving on up to 10/20 again... but I'm planning on waiting a bit for that... winning some more cash first at these levels.

a good, quick day.

I've been having a lot of days like today. I play for a little while, win some money, decide to stop. jump back on, play for another little while, stop. Jump on again, win again, stop. In about 100 minutes of play, I'm up 290 marracas today. That's how I've been running: Goot, very goot. I'm really not supposed to stop, but I often do. Superstition or something. The fact is, when I am better than the other guys, I'm supposed to stick around until they are broke or I am asleep. It's easier for me to do in a casino than at home. When you leave a casino, you are done. At home, I can jump on whenever I feel like it. I've been going with that this year, and so far, it's worked out OK.

Here's a few fun hands from the evening:

Ok, that was played terribly. If you want to call 2 bets cold with 910o fine, you'll never win money playing poker, but fine (you do play on Party poker after all) , but at least check raise me on the flop. Or go away on the turn when the ace hits. Cause now you can only beat pocket eights and QJ suited and are losing to every other possible holding I might have.

Ok, I missed a river raise there. I got confused: was he slowplaying a flush? Did he make a straight? I play my sets a little too conservatively when I get re-raised with them. It's a leak because I miss bets sometimes... certainly more than I save on the occasional time I am beat.

How do you like the 3 bet on the flop with 2 overs and no draw? Shouldn't he at least check/call the river? Cause now he can't beat anything on the board. I guess he didn't take game theory.

why I don't slowplay on PP.

Most people lose bets here. Not the redmanjew. Today I was down about 550 bucks before coming back and ending up slightly up for the day.

Here's a hand that helped me come back... it's kinda fun. and it was the perfect turn card, no doubt.

If I had check raised the flop, I may have lost TNC101 (the AK). Also, i may not have gotten raised on the turn. If I had checked and just called on the flop, I would have most likely gotten 2 bets out of each guy on the turn, instead of three.

Love that turn!!!!!

High level excitement at the WSOP!

Here's a photo of me looking at my hole cards during the WSOP main event.

And here's me folding those same cards.

Here's me on day 2. I'm all geared up because I felt one guy had a read on me a little bit. I am never playing a big time tourney again without the gear! it's like being in armor.

Glossary for the people

My mother (and others) have mentioned they don't understand all the poker terms... so here's a brief glossary:

SNG: sit and go. it's a tournament that starts as soon as the required numnber of players register for it. There are nine person SNGs on many sites alll the time. It's sort of an on-demand mini-tournament.

NL HE: no limit texas hold em, where a bet can be any amount.

L HE: Limit texas hold em, where there is a prescribed amount for each bet.

Shorthanded (SH): a game where there are six or less people playing.

5/10: the amounts of the bets. So, in a limit game, each bet and raise must be $5 before the flop and on the flop, and must be $10 on the turn and river.

High / Low: A game where players are trying to make both the best and worst hands, and each is worth half of the pot.

Draw: A hand where you need to improve to win. i.e., I was drawing to my flush.

Runner runner: a hand where someone needs both the turn and the river to go correctly for them to win. example: "I flopped three nines, but he went runner runner to make a flush and beat me. "

PT: Poker tracker, software used to create statistics on me and my opponents.

BB/100: Big bets per hundred hands. a measurement. Big bets is the bigger bet in the game (in 5/10, it would be 10), and how many of those I am winning or losing per 100 hands played. so 1.3 BB/100 hands means I am winning $13 / per hundred hands played.

BR: Bankroll.

WSOP: World series of poker.

Set: three of a kind

top pair, top kicker: when you have the highest pair on the board and the best possible kicker card: example: The flop was K 10 4, and I had and AK in my hand, so I had a pair of kings with an ace kciker , or top pair top kicker.

Nut flush draw: When you are drawing to the best possible flush.

Goals.

Well, the Main event had very few runners (17), so I won the overall SOP points in a walk.

My dad suggested to me that I set a goal of winning 1000 maraccas per week. I really haven't had any goals, short of getting to a major live tourney this year (missions accomplished) and win more than I did last year.

But a thou a week? Sounds both scary and completely do-able. Course we all feel like this when we're running good.

I'm definitely going to try to win my way into some more of the bigger online tourneys over the next few months... my weekends are pretty packed for the next six weeks or so, but hopefully that will change in mid-october and I'll be raring to go.

Also, I may play more SNGs. I generally play 3 at a time, and the total buy in is about 120 bucks. I am thinking about playing one at a time at a higher buy in and seeing how that goes.
I'm thinking it'll be wildly successful or some serious crash and burn.

your current points leader

There was a death in the family and so I am in Dayton Ohio. This prevents me from playing in today's wptfan series of poker (SOP) Main Event.

There were 15 events in the series, and Jacksup (matt matros) and Peter Feldman (Nordberg) have played in most of the events, along with some other good players... I have played in seven events, cashed 5 times total, and won three of them. For whatever reason, I've dominated the series. I played in the seven card stud high/low event on wednesday night and, despite only have played the game for about 40 minutes on pokerstars once, won the event.

The fact that I am not playing is notable only because I am the SOP current points leader (by a lot, I have 450 pts and the #2 guy has less than 300) and cashing the main event (which I would have had a fairly good chance of doing, better than average, anyway) would have locked up the overall points lead, which is worth a few hundred bucks.

I've learned that knowing how to play and win tournaments is a very valuable skill, and is certainly why I won the stud event. All I know about that game is what are good starting hands, and if you have a board lock, raise like the dickens. Everything else was tournament strategy.

When we got to heads up play, I had 30k in chips to the other guy's 11K. His strategy was to play every hand to showdown and see if luck would be with him. It worked very well, and quickly i was down to 1.5k in chips to his 40K. I got lucky a few times, got back to 8K, and then I was able to sit back and crush. It was over pretty quickly. Because he played nearly every hand out, when ever I had a good hand, I could extract a lot of value for it.

Anyway, there's maybe one or two guys who can catch me if they win the main event today, otherwise first place money is mine. (Mine! I tell you, mine!)

It's not so much about winning the money, cause it's not enough to really notice, but more about the prestige of winning the series (even more so having played in less than half the events).

We'll know by the end of the day. As long as I finish in the top three, I make some money. I am a near lock to finish in the top 2 (I think the current #3 would have to win it and the #2 would have to finish in 2nd) for me to finish 3rd. It also depends on how many people end up playing. if there is a smaller turnout, less than 50 people, I might already have 1st won.)

crushing and getting crushed

So, after the WSOP, I was super confident about my game. I decided it was time to move up in stakes. I had been playing 5/10 shorthanded limit holdem sucessfully. I moved on up to 10/20 SH LHE.

And. Got. Crushed.

Basically, everything bad thing that could have happened did. My big pairs weren't holding up (to runner runner straights, etc) My draws never got there. Everyone elses draws got there WAY too often. And everyone was super agressive (usually I am one of the most agressive guys at the table). I like playing with super agressive players normally, but when everybody is highly agressive, it's an adjustment. I don't think I adjusted as well as I could have. I found myself calling down players with middle pair and losing.

After two days of getting creamed (-2600), I decided to drop back down. I think I ran really badly, and played a little weak too.

Dropping back down to 5/10 has been great though. I am killing the tables. PT tells me that in the last 15 hours i've played 5/10 (which is a VERY small sample size, but how much 5/10 I've played since I got back from the wsop) I'm winning 6.54 BB/100 hands. which is a fuckload. (That translates to 132.9 marracas per hour in real cash).

I know I can't keep running this good at 5/10, but man, it sure is nice to ride the wave a bit. I plan on playing 5/10 for a while longer, and then taking another shot at 10/20 when I've built the BR up a bit more.

Whenever I read poker blogs, there seems to be a superstition that if you write about how good you are doing, then you immediately go into a losing streak. Luckily, I don't believe in superstitions. (That sentence, taken by itself, is almost funny.)

Oh, and the players are abjectly awful.

So I got that going for me.

first one out

well, it's time I guess that I joined the other online poker guys and got me-self a blog. Here she is.

She's sexy, I will say that.

So, who am I again?

I am redmanjew. I play a lot of online poker. It's slowly transitioning into my actual job. The money is good and it's still fun and so here I am.

I played in the WSOP for the first time this year... I played in event 37 ($1500 NL hold em), whish I satellited into for $26 and finished 254th of 2800 players, winning $2296. It was my 2nd most profitable day evah.

Then, I played the Main event at the world series and made it to day two with an average chipstack (22,300.) I was all-in for the first time when, as the first break was just about to begin, I flopped top pair, top kicker and the nut flush draw. Turns out I was up against a set, and though I made my flush, he made the boat and sent me to the rail.

In case if you are wondering, it sucks to get knocked out of the world series.

I did get to play with Rafe Furst, minh Nygnn (sic!) and Berry Johnston, with the last two sitting to my immediate left for several hours.

I actually held my own against them, which was cool. Though rafe was at the other end of the table and we never mixed it up.

More to come... it's the first entry and all... so I gotta keep it short and boring.
